Animal shelters are facilities that house animals such as puppies, dogs, kittens, cats, rabbits and other small animals. Such shelters provide protection for these animals, which have been given up for adoption by their owners or found as strays. Usually animal shelters are owned and operated by state and local humane societies. Animal shelters, also called rescue centers or rescue foundations, provide rescue funds, promote adoption of pets, and give unwanted pets a second chance. If you can't keep your pet or would like to adopt a dog or other pet, give your local animal shelter a call. Animal shelters near you can be found in your phone book or in online directory listings.
