Court reporters, including specialists referred to as stenographers or scopists, perform dictation and shorthand duties in a variety of settings, most commonly within the legal system. Some registered court reporters do indeed work in courts, while legal or mediation firms retain others. Still other court reporters perform minute-taking tasks during audio or video conferencing. Many court reporters use shorthand to take down testimony or speech, while others use a stenograph - a machine much like a typewriter, which allows fast, accurate transcription. A more modern branch of court reporting is scopistry, in which scopists use computer-aided transcription software to read and sometimes edit official notes created online. Experienced court reporters sit in on hearings, trials, videography, and audio recording sessions, ensuring that every word is recorded quickly and accurately.
