Cabinet makers are trained to identify various types of wood and composite materials, safely operate hand and power tools and to use woodworking machines, and other materials to construct a finished product. Cabinet makers produce items that can be used in both the home and office environment. Employers and labor unions like the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America sponsor apprenticeship programs. They generally last 4 years and include at least 2000 hours of work experience and 144 hours of classroom instruction. They end with a written exam, and those who pass become journey-level cabinet makers. Some cabinet makers in the United States belong to the Cabinet Makers Association to increase their professional knowledge and to keep their competitive edge.
