Electrolysis, sometimes referred to as laser hair removal, provides permanent body hair removal for men and women. Electrolysis services are offered in many places, from at-home kits, to salons, spas, beauty centers and clinics. Common hair removal areas include facial (lip and ear hair, eyebrow shaping), back, chest and bikini (genital) areas. Electrolysis involves insertion of tiny, hair-thin wires into each follicle (insertion should not pierce the skin, if done properly). Electricity is applied, either through heat (thermolysis) or lye (galvanic method), and the root of the follicle is damaged to prevent future hair growth. Laser hair removal (not to be confused with lasik, laser eye surgery) uses specialty pulsed-light machines to target the root of the follicle, achieving the same result with a slightly different method. Each system has its cheerleaders; prices can vary greatly from place to place. Ask for reviews and referrals at any clinic you're considering, and make sure to check the Better Business Bureau before purchasing an at-home electrolysis kit.
