Nurse practitioners are registered nurses who've continued their education beyond that required of registered nurses. Nurse practitioners will have completed advanced education (generally a minimum of a master's degree) and advanced medical training. Nurse practitioners can provide a broad range of health care services, very much the same as the care provided by physicians. While nurse practitioners often maintain close working relationships with physicians, they usually work autonomously and are not required to work directly with or under physicians. Unlike registered nurses, they are able to open their own clinical practices, and can serve as a patient's regular health care provider and see patients of all ages.
