When low income people are looking for places to live in large cities where the rent is high, they will often turn to a housing authority for assistance. Housing authorities are governmental agencies or governmental departments that help low income people find places to live or operate low income housing projects. Some housing authorities simply help low income people find apartments and homes in cities where rent is high. Many housing authorities will induce rent control on certain apartment in order to assure that some rents stay low. Many housing authorities are in charge of an areas low income housing projects. Some housing authorities are operated by cites and are city housing authorities other housing authorities are part of the state government and are state housing authorities.
