When an industry or a special interest group wants to have their agendas advanced politically, they often hire a lobbying firm or lobbyists to help them out. Lobbyists are people who speak to politicians and policy makers all the time and who are paid to advance an agenda with those politicians and policy makers. Most lobbyists work for lobbying firms although some are independent. Many lobbying firms have been set up by special interest groups or industries to advance the agenda of the special interest group or the industry that set them up. Some lobbying firms lobby for many different special interest groups and industries and who they lobby for depends on who is paying them at the time. Some lobbying firms operate on the state level in state capitals while others operate on the national level in Washington. In some large cites there are lobbying firms that operate on the city level.
