Deciding on an ambulance company or EMS - Emergency Medical Service - is a task that should be done well ahead of time. When an emergency arises, there may not be time to make a considered decision. It's best to have the name of your chosen medical service, whether public or private, posted near each telephone in your home, ready to inform operators at 911. All ambulance services should be able to provide immediate critical care, life support, rescue services and transportation to more advanced medical facilities with an intensive care unit (ICU). Ambulance workers, called medics, paramedics or EMTs (Emergency Medical Technicians), have training across several nursing specializations, including neonatal, CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and basic and advanced life support. EMTs are also trained in the use of special medical equipment such as defibrillators and choke savers.
