When a trucking or transportation company is hauling an oversized load, they must have a pilot car accompany the oversized load. Many heavy haulers hire independent pilot car companies to do pilot car work for them. Pilot car companies are sometimes called escort car companies or flag car companies. Some flag car companies do pole work while other escort car companies do not do pole work. Some escort car companies operate only in one state while other pilot car companies operate in several states. Escort cars also can accompany heavy hauls or extra tall hauls. Often transporters of model homes or heavy machinery need to hire pilot cars.
