In some U.S. states, the Justice of the Peace is a judge of a court of limited jurisdiction. Proceedings before a Justice of the Peace are often faster and less formal than the proceedings in other courts. In some jurisdictions a party convicted or found liable before the Justice of the Peace may have the right to a new trial before the judge of a higher court rather than a more strictly considered appeal. A Justice of the Peace is also a judge who can perform civil marriage ceremonies. This is often requested by couples who do not wish to have their wedding performed by a religious clergy member. Justices of the Peace can also sometimes perform same-sex civil unions, or same-sex marriages where these are allowed by law.
