Companies that use marine transport to move goods from one port to another usually hire stevedoring contractors. Stevedoring contractors have employees and equipment at the port to unload a cargo ship when it arrives. Stevedoring contractors also may load ships prior to departure. Stevedores are sometimes called longshoremen. Stevedores provide skilled labor. They are trained to operate machinery—like cranes—to lift and stow heavy cargo containers aboard ships. Stevedoring contractors sometimes create contracts with port terminals to handle all stevedoring services at the terminal. Some stevedores belong to unions. Stevedoring contractors help cargo ships deliver goods to national and international ports.
