People who have a need for representation in a legal matter will often hire attorneys at law; or lawyers; to research and present their case in court. Lawyers are licensed by the state in which they practice law. In all jurisdictions in the United States, except for the state of Wisconsin, lawyers are required to take and pass a bar examination to be admitted to the bar. The bar examinations attorneys at law take include a national portion and a portion designated to the laws of the state they wish to practice in. Most states conduct a background check on lawyers who wish to join the bar of that state.
