Some doctors are physicians who hold the title Medical Doctor or MD while other doctors may hold a PhD in a particular area of health care, such as Psychology. Surgeons, who are also called doctors or physicians, have completed a residency specific to the area of surgery. Some doctors hold the title OMD, which is a Doctor of Oriental medicine. Physicians and surgeons can write prescriptions and some (but not all) doctors can write prescriptions. However, most doctors understand how prescription medication affects the area in which they specialize. For example, a psychologist with a PhD usually cannot write a prescription for medicine for depression, but usually does understand how medicine for depression works with their client.
