A pipe is a hollow cylinder or tube that transports water, steam, or other liquid or finely divided solid material, and is usually made of metal, ceramic, wood, or plastic. There are many different applications for pipes, including water, plumbing, sewage, industrial, oil natural gas, and exhaust. Pipeline transport refers to the transportation of goods through a pipe. Any gas, liquid or chemically stable substance can be sent through a pipeline. The most important industrial pipelines are oil and natural gas. Pipeline transport is the only economically feasible method of surface transport of large quantities of oil or natural gas.
