A constable is similar to a sheriff or deputy, but has a smaller jurisdiction with less authority. A constable can serve warrants, make arrests, oversee and supervise roads, and enforce the law. Constables can also serve subpoenas, eviction notices, judicial notices, tax notices, and claims. Constables may have an education in criminal justice or training in law enforcement. Their power is limited to a certain geographic area, such as a town or county. There are two types of constables, elected and appointed. To find a constable near you, check your local phone book or online yellow pages, whether you need a constable for collecting taxes or to serve a small claims process server.
