National Guard usually is considered to be a part-time position in the military, although there can be full time positions. The National Guard is apart of the United States Army and the United States Air Force. As part of the Army, it is called the Army National Guard, and consists of combat forces and support organization. As part of the air force, it is called Air National Guard. National Guard may be called up for extreme emergencies like an invasion of the United States or major catastrophes within her borders. Both the Army National Guard and the Air National Guard trains and equips troops.
