Often one of the first steps an unpublished author takes on the road to being published is the hiring of a literary agent. Literary agents represent authors. Literary agents shop unpublished manuscripts to publishing houses. When a publishing house shows interest in an author's work, the agent helps the author secure a publishing deal and helps negotiating the terms of that deal. Published authors use literary agents to shop their unpublished work or negotiate new publishing deals. Some literary agents work mostly with writers of fiction and some work mostly with non-fiction writers. Some agents work in agencies that employ many agents and some work by themselves. Some literary agents specialize in representing authors who work in a specific literary genre.
