Automobile windshields are made of a special type of laminated safety glass. Automakers first began using this type of glass in 1927. It's made by sandwiching a thin layer of clear flexible plastic film between two or more pieces of glass. This plastic film holds the glass in place when it breaks, which helps to lessen the chance of flying glass and the chance of injuries. This film is able to stretch while still keeping the glass stuck to it, which is why that crack in your windshield doesn't penetrate all the way through, unless normal window pane glass. This laminated safety glass also reduces high frequency sound and blocks ultraviolet radiation. Proper windshield installation enhances the safety features.
