Among the most prevalent types of organs is the pipe organ. Like pianos, pipe organs require occasional tuning, as well as possible repairing if something is broken or not working correctly. The purpose of tuning a pipe organ is to adjust the pitch of each pipe so that they all sound in tune with each other. Organs go out of tune for a variety of reasons; however one of the most common is temperature. Pipe organ sounds are generated by the vibration of a column of air within a pipe. The temperature of this column of air affects the pitch of the note being sounded. As the size, shape, and material used to make each pipe differ, often radically, within the same organ, the individual pipes are affected differently by the same change of temperature.
