Two of the most popular types of consumer satellite equipment and systems are satellite television and radio. Consumer satellite television reception in the United States began in the early 1980's with the introduction of the first home satellite systems designed for receiving the same signals used for distribution to cable television systems. Early setups were very expensive, with large 12-foot dishes that some homeowners found unsightly. Today's satellite television equipment and systems are much more affordable by average Americans, and no longer require huge dishes. Satellite radio is a more recent phenomenon, having become popular only in the last several years. Both types of satellite equipment and systems are available for retail purchase.
