A commercial photographer is hired to capture images that are required by a client, whether it's for a personal purpose, such as a graduation, or for a published purpose like an annual report. The commercial photographer often makes suggestions as to background, lighting and poses that may enhance the outcome of the image the client wants to capture. Commercial photographers have access to and are familiar with the equipment required to take both printed photographs and digital images. This equipment includes film, chemicals for film development and dark rooms, as well as cameras and lenses. Some commercial photographers work only in a limited local area, while others will travel and work nationally.
