Cosmetic surgery can be used for both functional reasons or aesthetic reasons. An example of cosmetic surgery that is done for functional reasons is reconstructive surgery to fix a defect such as a cleft palate in a young child. Cosmetic surgery that is done for aesthetic reasons is done to alter a person's appearance or to change something that the person feels is unflattering, such as removing a “nasal hump” on the bridge of the nose. People who are considering cosmetic surgery for either functional or aesthetic reasons will often seek a referral for a plastic surgeon from friends or family members who may have had cosmetic surgery.
