People who want a sweetened substance to add flavor to breakfast foods such as waffles and pancakes will often choose to purchase maple sugar or syrup. Maple syrup is a product that is made from the sap of maple trees. Once the sap has been drained from the tree, it is then boiled down until only a sweetened syrup remains. That syrup is then usually packaged and sold at food retailers such as supermarkets and grocery stores. Manufacturers will often boil down maple syrup even further until it has lost most of its water content to produce maple sugar, a hard candy that is often sold in pressed blocks.
