Many people look for the qualifications of a marriage and family counselor before choosing one for counseling. In many states, a minimum requirement to become a licensed marriage and family counselor is a master's degree in Marriage and Family Counseling or psychology; however some marriage and family counselors hold PhDs, as well. All but three states require some form of licensure or certification for practice outside of school settings. People often seek a referral to a marriage and family counselor from friends or family members who have had successful outcomes while working with a counselor. Many marriage and family counselors are members of the International Association of Marriage and Family Counselors (IAMFC).
