Some department stores are nationally recognized. Through the years, department stores have been central fixtures to downtown areas and as anchors at large suburban shopping malls. When people are shopping for goods at modern day department stores, they may be surprised to learn that the first department store was started in 1852 in Paris. At the time, it was a novel idea that department stores provided goods at a set price without haggling, and would provide exchanges and refunds.
