Areas of the United States that have experienced a slow down or stoppage of industrial or economic growth will often be helped by various economic development agencies. Unemployment or low income areas may also be helped by economic development agencies. When local or state economies are suffering from severe economic distress, an economic development agency may come to the area and help with job stimulation and economic growth. Economic development agencies will sometimes work with politicians to develop new laws and policies to stimulate economic growth and development. Both urban and rural areas are often the focus of economic development agencies when trying to stimulate growth or job production.
