Local governments and companies in areas that have frequent geological activity, such as volcanoes, earthquakes, flooding and tidal waves, may call upon geophysicist to aid them in a variety of ways. A geophysicist can often determine if an active volcano may erupt in the near future, or if a small earthquake could be a sign of a larger one later. Exploratory geophysicists can study an area and determine the history of the land and see if it has a history of flooding from excessive rainfall or tidal waves. Geophysicists usually do this work on their own premises and labs, but usually require some on-site work as well.
