Scrap metals processing and recycling is a term used to describe the re-use of metal. Old, unwanted metal such as vehicles, building supplies, and surplus materials, are taken to a scrap yard, where they are processed for later melting into new products. A scrap metals scrap yard may allow customers to browse their lot and purchase items before they are sent to the smelters, although many scrap yards that deal in large quantities of scrap metal often do not, instead selling entire units such as engines or machinery by weight with no regard to their functional status. The scrap metals that are sent for processing and recycling will typically have their impurities, such as wood, plastic, paint and fabric, burned off, and the metal can then be re-melted to produce new metal products.
