To define the term software, think of the computer as two different elements: its physical components, and the pre-written programs that make it work and allow it to perform calculations and tasks. Some people liken the software of a computer to its mind, as opposed to its body, much the same way you can physically touch a person's body, but you cannot physically touch a mind. Software exists for innumerable uses, ranging from business, technology, academic and military applications to games, graphics, home life and hobby software. Software can be purchased from a variety of sources, including retail computer stores, wholesale software outlets, and online software stores.
