Muffler and exhaust systems have a primary purpose of noise reduction in an automobile. The muffler, an acoustic device inserted in the exhaust system, is designed to reduce the noise that a car exhaust makes. When the exhaust gases from an engine are released they create a loud noise that is caused by the exhaust gases passing from the high pressure of the engine's cylinder to the normal pressure of the atmosphere. The muffler is a metal tube that contains pipes and chambers that direct the noise from exhaust gases back toward the engine, or back and forth among the chambers. This reduces the noise that the exhaust system puts out into the environment.
