Automobiles are the most popular form of transportation in America. Americans love their cars, especially in regions that do not have mass transit widely available. Since the 1920's nearly all automobiles have been mass-produced to meet specific markets, so manufacturers design and build their automobiles to achieve marketing plans. Automobile body manufacturers build automobiles in a wide range of body styles.
Most early automobile body styles were derived from those used in horse-drawn carriages, so the terms used to describe them were often coach building terms, although sometimes their application in the automobile differed from the carriage use. Other types of automobile bodies were soon invented, and either used modifications of earlier terminology or wholly new terms to describe them.
