A vineyard is a very specific kind of farm that specializes in growing grapes. The vast majority of vineyards grow grapes that are used in wine. But some vineyards grow grapes that are sold at grocery stores and super markets. Some vineyards also grow grapes that are used in grape juice, brandy or fortified wines. Many wine growers also have wineries where juice from the grapes grown in the vineyards is turned into wine. Different vineyards specialize in growing different kinds of grapes for wine. The type of grape grown in a vineyard is largely contingent on the climate and soil types found in the vineyard's area. Different climates and different soil types are conducive to growing different types of grapes. In some areas the vineyards grow chardonnay grapes where other vineyards grow pinot noir grapes, cabernet sauvignon grapes, merlot grapes or zinfandel grapes.
