Embroidery can add beautiful design features to fine fabrics, adding a touch of elegance to one's person via their garments, or one's home via linens, quilts, tapestries and other home décor. While the origins of embroidery are unknown by historians, examples survive from ancient Egypt, Iron Age Northern Europe and Song Dynasty China. Elaborately embroidered clothing, religious objects, and household items have been a mark of wealth and status in many cultures including ancient Persia, India, Byzantium, medieval England, and Baroque Europe. Today, embroidery can range from elaborate designs incorporating ribbons, beads, crystals, pearls and sequins, to simple, machine-embroidered logos on t-shirts or hats.
