More than fifty percent of Americans identify with the Protestant religion and many of them attend churches with those teachings. More than twenty percent of Americans identify themselves as Catholic and many of them attend Catholic services at Catholic churches. It comes as no surprise, then, that in the mid-1990s, there were more than three hundred and twenty thousand Protestant churches in the United States and almost twenty thousand Catholic churches. Since there are so many churches in the United States, people who are looking to follow a particular religion usually don't have to go too far away from home to find churches that practice their religion.
