Sometimes families are just not able to care for mentally challenged or mentally handicapped members and when this is the case the developmentally disabled person will often go to live in a home for the mentally disabled and the mentally impaired. Some homes for mentally handicapped people are half-way homes where mentally challenged adults live. Other homes for the mentally disabled specialize in caring for the severely retarded and the profoundly retarded. Some homes for the mentally handicapped are homes for mentally challenged children and developmentally disabled youths. Some homes specialize in caring for people with certain kinds of mental handicaps such as a home for those with Down syndrome or a home for those with fragile X syndrome.
