Home based businesses are growing in popularity as more people want to stay at home to avoid regular commuting or to raise children. Some people have a home based business because they want the flexibility in their hours to accommodate other activities that they enjoy. Having a flexible home based business often means the owner can avoid doing errands and taking trips during peak times, such as going to the store or the fitness center. The number of 'Mom-and-Pop' home-based businesses, those with no paid employees, grew from more than 16.5 million in 2000 to almost 17.0 million in 2001, a rate of growth of 2.7 percent, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
