When people throw something away, that trash is usually taken by garbage collectors to sanitary landfills. Sometimes, people will take their own garbage to sanitary landfills. Sanitary landfills often charge a per-ton fee when people bring their trash to them. Sanitary landfills are normally owned by city governments, county governments or other local governmental entities. Sanitary landfills normally consist of a large hole in the ground. This hole is usually lined with a protective material so that hazardous materials in the garbage cannot leach into water supplies. The lined hole is filled with compacted, or baled, garbage. Most sanitary landfills have compacting, or baling, equipment on site. Landfills are normally located away from residential areas.
