Sometimes companies that own railroad lines contract out the use of their railroad lines and contract out other facets of running trains on those lines to other companies. Some freight railroad companies contract out usage on the railroad to freight carriers. Interests that own passenger train and commuter train lines contract out with commuter train companies that actually run the trains. The commuter train companies may contract out the janitorial work and the food service work on their trains to third parties. The parties that actually own the commuter trains or the freight trains my contract out with other companies to actually run and drive the trains.
