Instead of renting out an entire apartment, people who are planning on staying in one place for only a few months or for a finite duration will sometimes rent a room in a boarding house or a rooming house. Boarding houses and rooming houses are houses where the owner rents out one or several bedrooms to people for months at a time. Some boarding houses and rooming houses are student boarding houses and student rooming houses. Only students are allowed to rent rooms in student boarding and rooming houses, which can often be found in college and university towns or near college and university campuses. Many boarding houses rent rooms to all kinds of people but some will only allow people of one sex to rent rooms, such as a men's boarding house, a men's rooming house, a women's rooming house, or a women's boarding house.
