The process of tanning involves exposing animal hides and animal skins to chemicals called tannins. Tannins make the hides more durable and prevent them from decomposing. Some tanning companies and tanned product manufacturers use chemical tannins such as chrome to tan hides while others use animal tannins or vegetable tannins to tan hides. Some tanning firms are small companies while others are larger outfits. Most tanners in the United States tan cow hides in order to make suede and leather. Some tanning companies also can tan the hides of elk, deer, North American bison, or exotic animals like water buffalo and zebra. Some tanners specialize in tanning hides brought to them by hunters. Most tanning firms sell the pelts they tan to clothing manufacturers or to upholstery outfits.
