Water filtration systems come in a wide array, from ultraviolet (UV) light systems to magnetic filters, membranes to distillers that function as water softeners. Filter manufacturers create systems to cleanse not only drinking water, but also the water used on crops and in wastewater facilities. Common pollutants include salt, insecticides and sulfur (the cause of the rotten egg odor so common in some areas). Lead and iron can cause a metallic taste in some water supplies, as well as being unhealthy - lead, in particular, is dangerous. These metallic elements can be removed using magnetic filters. Salt can be strained from water through distillation and the use of membrane filters, leaving it potable or useful for watering crops. UV filters are noninvasive, shining light in a certain spectrum onto water and rendering any bacteria within it harmless.
