Finding the right public accountant
Once you have a list of accountants in your area, you should interview them. Most accountants will offer you free consultations. While interviewing the accountant, you should find out if they belong to state accounting organizations. You should also find out where and when the accountant received their accounting degree, and how long they have been a practicing accountant. You should find out what kind of experience they have working with people in your situation. And you should also ask for a list of references.
At the interview you should also find out what their accounting specialties are, what kind of technological know-how they have (you certainly do not want to hire an accountant who does not have up-to-date accounting programs on his computer), and how much they charge. You should also ask whether the accountant has a partner; whether they bring in additional help during tax season; and whether they have ever worked for the IRS. After the interview, you should check with the AICPA and state accounting organizations to see what kind of standing the accountants you are considering have.
Finally, you should choose an accountant that you feel comfortable with. Because it is often difficult to switch accountants, it is vital that you choose a public accountant that is not only competent, but is also someone you feel as if you can work with for a long time.
