Every automotive vehicle needs electricity to operate. The electrical system of a vehicle consists of a battery and an alternator, except in vehicles earlier than 1970, when most of them had generators instead of alternators. The alternator is connected to the engine by a belt and generates electricity to recharge the battery. This gave a more reliable power source capable of handling greater loads, and was the impetus to electrify more and more vehicle subsystems which had hitherto been driven by other sources of power. This availability encouraged the use of other electrical accessories, such as lighting (which had previously been through oil lamps or acetylene lamps) and the automobile self starter.
