How to Find Archaeologists
Types of Archaeologists Archaeologists can hold a variety of positions in different sectors. Some archaeologists work in academic positions at universities or colleges. Archaeologists in university and college positions teach various levels of courses in archaeology. Archaeologists also can hold positions at museums, which may be either connected with a university or college, or independent. Archaeologists working for museums spend their time conducting research (sometimes publishing the results), giving public presentations, preparing museum exhibitions and shows, and conserving archeological collections. Some archaeologist positions exist within the federal government, as well as for state government agencies. You can also find archaeologists in the private sector, working for engineering and environmental companies, for companies specializing in archaeological investigations, or as private consultants. Qualifications of Archaeologists Becoming an archaeologist requires specific education and training. Depending on the type of archaeologist, the archaeological specialty, and what type of position is held, the requirements may be different. First you must receive a B.A./B.S. degree. After that, there are two levels of graduate training in archaeology. The first is an M.A. or M.S. degree, which takes about 1-2 years of course work and usually requires a written thesis which presents the results of original research by the student. An M.A./M.S. would be enough to direct field crews and is sufficient for many government positions in archaeology. It is also usually sufficient to work in the private sector, to teach in a community college, and to work for some museums. The second graduate degree is the Ph.D., requires 2-3 years of courses beyond the M.A. and the successful preparation and oral defense of a dissertation containing original research in an archaeology specialization. A Ph.D. is required to teach in a college or university or work for a museum as curator. Archeologists are important scientists, working to help us learn about and understand human history and culture on this planet.

An archaeologist is someone who specializes in the study of historic cultures and historic peoples through the artifacts that they have left behind. Sometimes developers hire archaeologists or consult with archaeologists when they plan on developing an area known to be rich in historic artifacts. Often it is legally mandated that archaeologists be consulted in such circumstances. Archaeologists should also be consulted when people dig up something that may be of historic importance when working on their property or when digging for a construction project. Different archeologists specialize in studying different historic cultures. An archaeologist who specializes in the people who once lived in an area should be consulted when something is dug up in that area.
