How to Choose Back Flow Prevention Devices
--How Do Backflow Prevention Devices Work?--
All water distribution systems are designed to have the water flowing in the direction from the distribution system to the consumer. Sometimes, certain unusual situations or conditions within the water distribution system may cause water to flow in the wrong direction. This condition is known as backflow. When backflow occurs, it is important to reverse the direction of the water, to protect the water supply from contamination. There are various deviant conditions that can cause backflow. Two examples are cross-connections and back siphonage. A cross-connection is an unprotected actual or potential connection between a potable water system used to supply water for drinking purposes and any source or system containing unapproved water or a substance that is not or cannot be approved as safe, wholesome, and potable. By-pass arrangements, jumper connections, removable sections, swivel or changeover devices, or other devices through which backflow could occur, are considered to be cross-connections. Back-siphonage is caused by mainline piping failures or drafting due to high demands. For example, it is a condition that can occur when the drinking water system pressure drops below that of the fire protection system, drawing the fire protection system water back into the drinking water system.
--Types of Back Flow Prevention Devices--
Backflow prevention devices such as check valves, air separation gaps and similar devices are installed in certain situations to prevent cross-contamination of the drinking water supply. These backflow prevention devices are required by code and must be installed and periodically tested by qualified personnel. Different devices are required for different types of facilities and uses. High hazard areas such as laboratories, clinics and hospitals require sophisticated backflow prevention devices.
--There are over 10,000 reported cases of backflow contamination each year. Some cases can be fatal. Backflow prevention devices are necessary to protect our water supplies.

Many municipalities require people to install back flow prevention devices and have them inspected regularly to help prevent water contamination. One conventional back flow prevention products is the air gap. Air gaps are simple devices that use gravity and valves to prevent back flow. By keeping the flood line higher than the water outlet, air gaps are able to use gravity and valves to prevent the water from returning to the supply. As new products are created to replace older conventional methods, many people have to update their back water prevention devices. Luckily, many new products can be retrofitted to fir the old plumbing. By retrofitting the new products to the old system, it is possible for homeowners to have an economical process of keeping their home up to code.
