Some baskets these days are manufactured by machines. However, part of the tradition is that baskets are defined as receptacles that are woven by hand of various types of vegetable fibers. Gift baskets are used to present items such as fruit, wine, chocolates, gourmet foods, bath products, or flowers. Some baskets are used to cradle bottles of red wine to assist pouring. Another type of utilitarian basket is the hot air balloon basket, which serves to carry the operator and passengers. Baskets are often used for holding indoor plants, although it is best to have an inner liner to prevent water from spilling out when watering. Some decorative baskets are made by basket weavers to perpetuate an art form, such as the Sweetgrass baskets of South Carolina, which are coiled, handmade baskets of African origin made of sweetgrass (sewn with longleaf pine needles and strips of palmetto leaf).
