How to Choose and How to Find Bridge Builders
Bridge builders build all sorts of bridges, from vehicular and pedestrian bridges, to boardwalks and covered bridges. Bridge builders can be contractors, engineers or architects. They work with designers to help build safe, sturdy, long-lasting bridges or trails. Bridges can be made of timber, steel, environmentally conscious, innovative, economic, performance service, truss and aesthetic materials. Some bridges are built over wetlands, requiring conscientious methods and environmental care for on-site installations in order to preserve the surrounding ecosystem. Such bridges are frequently built with pilings. Some bridge builders specialize in the construction of only one type of custom bridge, such as light duty bridges for residential yards, public parks or complexes or golf courses, while others specialize in the construction of a wide range of custom bridges, such as public access boardwalks, vehicular traffic bridges, pedestrian bridges, trail bridges and covered bridges. Whether commercial or residential, such projects require the expertise of bridge builders to ensure all components of a bridge are included in the plan. You can find bridge builders under contractors, bridge designers or bridge builders in the phone book or by checking online directory listings for one in your area. Bridge builders can work independently or as part of a team or group. They often work with contractors, engineers, construction workers, draftspeople, builders and architects to produce the finished product. Bridge builders often get their products and supplies, such as timber, nails, nuts and bolts, direct from the manufacturer. Some bridge builders are green or environmentally conscious, designing sustainable projects in order to be friendlier to the environment. In your search for a quality bridge or trails builder, ensure the one you select is licensed and has the proper education and insurance.

The type of contractors that you will need to complete a bridge project will depend greatly on the type of bridge needed. For vehicular traffic, you will need an engineering firm that is well experienced in designing a structurally sound bridge, with quality construction that is meant to last. Bridges meant for pedestrian traffic, such as those along hiking trails or along a boardwalk, will not need to extensive structural considerations of vehicular bridges; however, they will need to be safe for walkers. Pedestrian bridges can use timber or concrete as their main construction material, whichever type works best with the overall aesthetic look of the entire construction project. Some bridge contractors may be willing to work with you to design a custom bridge that meets your exact specifications.
