In order to gain guidance and counseling in issues such as academic development, career development and social development, many children and adolescents will see a guidance counselor. Although most schools have guidance counseling available their students, many parents will choose to seek out a private guidance counselor. In most states, a master's degree is required to be an adolescent guidance counselor. Many guidance counselors are certified by the National Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC).
