When lenders, commercial businesses, or medical practices have customers that are past due on their fees or financial debts, they often hire third party collection agencies to take the actions necessary to recover the money that is owed. Collection agencies can collect many different types of debts, including child support and late fees. Some lending companies have divisions or subsidiaries that act as collection agencies, which can result in better asset management for the lender by not having to involve third party organizations. While some complaints have been received about collection agencies engaging in threatening behavior, harassment or coercion, reputable firms will not use such tactics, and will operate within applicable rules, regulations and laws to recover funds that are past due or accounts that are in default.
