Constables might be considered a law enforcement officer in some states of the United States; it varies from state to state. A constable might be simply an official responsible for service of process such as summonses or subpoenas for people to appear in court relating to criminal and/or civil matters. Constables in some states may fully empowered law enforcement officers who may have additional or specialized duties. In some states, a judge or the Court may appoint an individual to serve as a constable. In this way, a constable may be elected or appointed the position at a village, precinct or town of local government. Deputy constables as sworn officers or civil staff may assist a constable. Constables may be mainly process servers doing similar duties as a marshal.
